Microneedling Q & A
What is microneedling?
Microneedling is an innovative aesthetic treatment designed to trigger collagen production in your skin to provide a more youthful appearance. At Tri-Valley Medical Center, your provider can recommend microneedling to address a variety of skin concerns, including:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Scars
- Loose or sagging skin
- Brown spots
- Stretch marks
- Pigment issues
Microneedles can also improve the overall texture of your skin.
How does microneedling work?
Microneedling therapy uses a special device – called a dermaroller – comprised of tiny needles ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 millimeters in diameter. As your provider moves the dermaroller across your skin, it makes small pinpricks on the surface. In response to these micro-injuries, your body tries to heal itself which causes collagen and elastin production to increase in the area.
Collagen and elastin are important proteins in the connective tissue of your body. These proteins create your skin’s firm and plump appearance. As you age, your body produces less collagen and elastin. When combined with external factors like sun damage and stress, these changes because your skin to look older.
When the microneedling process causes small and controlled amounts of trauma to your skin, the new collagen and elastin that repairs them cause your skin to look tighter, plumper, and more youthful.
What can I expect during microneedling?
During your appointment, your Tri-Valley Medical Center provider applies anesthetic cream to your skin to increase your comfort during your procedure. In some cases, they might also apply lubricants to help the dermaroller slide across your skin smoothly.
It takes approximately 30 minutes to roll the dermaroller all over your skin to create even, microscopic punctures. After your treatment, you might experience reddened skin similar to a sunburn, but this fades in a few days as your skin begins to heal. Over the next few weeks, you’ll start to see changes in your skin as new collagen and elastin develop in the area.
For maximum benefit, your provider might recommend a series of 3-6 microneedling sessions, with a month between each session.
